International Literacy Day: How literacy empowers learners in the Chiapas region of Mexico

When Maria was born in 1987, it was frowned upon for women and girls to pursue education. As there were no secondary schools or high schools available in her area, she had to move away to finish her studies.

She recalls how she started reaching out to people in her community, going from house to house to encourage them to participate in literacy classes. Using simple exercises, she taught them how to hold a pencil, write their names and count from one to 20 in Tzotzil. When she realized that traditional teaching methods were not working, she introduced more playful approaches. Instead of arriving with a book and dictating, she would show an image and based on that image, learners would begin tracing their first letters.

She believes that education is the foundation of personal growth and development. When a person knows how to read and write, it becomes much more difficult for others to deceive them.
