UN and INEGI work with young people in Mexico to strengthen the critical use of statistical and geographic data for citizen participation

More than 30 young people between 17 and 30 years old, and from five states across the country, came together to discuss the availability, use of, access to, and dissemination of statistical and geographic information that could be used to design, implement, and monitor citizen-led projects. The gathering was convened by the United Nations System in Mexico and the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI).

To mark International Youth Day, observed each year on August 12, INEGI and UNESCO, in coordination with the UN Inter-Agency Group on Youth in Mexico, convened Datos en Acción: juventudes que transforman (Data in Action: Youth Who Transform), held in the Raúl Prebisch Room at ECLAC in Mexico City.

Allegra Baiocchi, UN Resident Coordinator in Mexico, affirmed that "young people are not merely a population affected by the challenges of our time; they are an indispensable part of the solutions. That is why it is essential to place within their reach the tools that enable them to understand and use data to participate actively in the decisions and actions that transform their realities."

In that spirit, INEGI developed Datos en Acción in collaboration with UNESCO. More than a data-consultation platform, it is an educational initiative designed to build young people's capacities to access, interpret, generate, and use statistical and geographic information, through pedagogical resources and tools that connect Mexican realities with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations 2030 Agenda. ECLAC, UNIDO, and the ILO also took part in developing these resources, alongside civil society, academia, and INEGI specialists.
